Bachelor of Science (Honours) Food Science

Food Science is a multidisciplinary science that integrates various fundamentals and potential aspects of food molecules, food chemistry, food microbiology, food safety, post-harvest processing, nutrition, food quality assessment, functional food and nutraceuticals. Students pursuing the Food Science programme in UTAR would be equipped with an in-depth understanding of science as it applies to foods and involves hands-on laboratory activities.

The students are guided and trained to understand the nature of raw food materials and their transformation into final consumable products with the concept of "From farm to fork". In fact, by understanding and mastering the knowledge of food science, knowing how the food ingredient change or interact when being stored or processed, capable of doing food risk assessment, able to apply proper techniques of operating food processing instrument and conducting food analysis can play an important role in producing safe, nutritious and wholesome food to meet the high demand of the increasing global population.

In this programme, students are also guided and have the opportunity to formulate their own creative new product development, optimising food production yield, quality and shelf life, gauging consumer demand and preference by conducting proper sensory tests in the equipped food processing lab and sensory lab in UTAR. Moreover, industry visit are organised for the students to provide them with real industrial practices and exposure to enhance their learning in those particular courses and bring more impactful fun learning experiences.
