How to be a Company Secretary in Malaysia?

A person is considered a secretary of a company if he or she shares legal responsibilities with the director. Because it is an important administrative role, companies operating in Malaysia are required to appoint a company secretary. According to Section 241 of the Companies Act 2016, it is mandatory for a company to hire a qualified company secretary. A member of a professional body recognised by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry is required.

Therefore, aspiring students pursuing careers as company secretaries who wish to pursue a professional qualification after completing their undergraduate degree programme at UTAR have one option:

The MACS Professional Examinations offered by the Malaysian Association of Company Secretaries (MACS).

The full memberships of both professional bodies (ACCS/FCCS of MACS) are qualified to act as named company secretaries upon application to the Companies Commission of Malaysia for a Practising Certificate under Section 241 of the Companies Act 2016.

Undergraduate programmes in the related fields of study will be given the professional paper exemption to complete the above professional qualification.
