Celebrating UTAR Students’ Excellence

In a grand celebration of academic brilliance, leadership, and outstanding contributions, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) organised the Student Awards and Representatives Appreciation Ceremony for the 2022/2023 batch. The event not only honoured the exceptional achievements of UTAR students but also recognised their invaluable contributions to the vibrant campus life.

UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat, expressed, “In this ever-changing world, the skills you have honed, the knowledge you have gained, and the experiences you have embraced within our university community will be the foundation of your future success,” as he highlighted the importance of the skills, knowledge, and experiences gained within the UTAR community.

Among the outstanding awardees, Tan Xuan Qing, a Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering with Honours student, was honoured with the UTAR SDG Merit Award and the Innovation and Creativity Award for his innovative creation in healthcare technology. His invention, The Vien Watch, is a wearable vein finder that projects vein patterns onto a patient’s skin.

Kan Vivian, a Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) Psychology student, was awarded the Outstanding Leadership Award for her leadership skills. Her enthusiastic contributions during UTAR Open Day campus tours and her nomination as a mace bearer for one of UTAR’s Convocations exemplify her dedication. She expressed her commitment to inspiring others to participate in events and develop their leadership abilities.

Bachelor of Media and Creative Studies (Honours) student Chen Yee Fei received well-deserved accolades for his passion for filmmaking, including the Judges’ Honourable Mention in the BMW Shorties competition and recognition for his short film “Where Time Stood Still”. His creative talents have shone brightly, earning him a spot at the Oscar-qualifying Short Film Festival & Asia 2023. At the ceremony, Chen was presented with the UTAR Outstanding Talent Award.

Ng Wen May, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery student who won the Sportswoman of The Year Award, has achieved remarkable sports accomplishments. Her achievements include first place in the National Dualiga Age Group Championship 2022, first place in the 113 Triathlon Desaru Seata Series 2022, and many others. Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) in Logistics & Supply Chain Management student Too Ying Chuen’s sports achievements earned him the Sportsman of The Year Award. Too won the Championship in the TKS Miri Malaysia Day Table Tennis Tournament 2022, the Championship in the Kejohanan Sukan Mahasiswa Zon Utara 2023, the Championship in the Sarawak Table Tennis Championship 2022, and many more. The ceremony also included the presentation of other prestigious awards, namely the Course-Based Outstanding Club and Society Award and the Non-Course-Based Outstanding Club and Society Award.

On a separate occasion, the UTAR Scholarship Award Presentation Ceremony for the June 2023 intake was organised to commemorate students who have received scholarships. As of 2023, UTAR has awarded over RM185.4million in internal scholarships to deserving students. Matthias Thong Yi Fan, a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering with Honours student and a recipient of the UTAR Scholarship for Top Achievers, said, “I am overjoyed to receive this scholarship, as it not only lightens my parents’ financial burden but also serves as motivation for me to excel in my studies. However, the real value of this scholarship goes beyond the monetary sum we are receiving. It lies within the opportunities for exposure and contribution to society, as well as the character and responsibility we develop.”

These exceptional achievements underscore the diversity of talent and the spirit of excellence that flourish within the UTAR community. The awards and accolades serve as a testament to the commitment and dedication of UTAR students who continue to make us proud, not only within the university but also on the global stage.

UTAR offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in areas including Accountancy, Actuarial Science, Applied Mathematics, Arts, Chinese Studies, Malaysia Studies, Business and Economics, Biotechnology, Engineering and Build Environment, Information and Communication Technology, Life and Physical Sciences, Medicine and Health Sciences, Media and Journalism, Education and General Studies, and Agriculture and Food Science. The university also engages in the provision and conduct of research, consultation, management and leadership training, and other related educational services at its Sungai Long and Kampar campuses in Malaysia.
