UTAR Produces Highly Sought-after Corporate Communication Practitioners

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR)'s Bachelor of Corporate Communication (Honours) is one of the most significant and long-standing programs under the Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI). In this program, students are taught essential communication, event management, and media-handling skills, equipping them for real-world projects and challenges.

The degree program also teaches students how to analyze corporate communication and public relations issues from a range of academic and practical perspectives, while training them to be able to manage communication effectively in the business world and achieve the desired goals.

Speaking about the distinctive strengths of this program, FCI Head of Department of Mass Communication Kenneth Lee Tze Wui said, “Our Corporate Communication program carefully integrates and familiarizes students with the fundamentals of communication, human behavior, and strategic management.

It also focuses on the use of information and communication technologies to prepare students for the corporate challenges in today's context. Students get to learn to apply related concepts to the communication objectives of businesses, industries, government groups, and non-profit organizations.”

Kenneth added that throughout the program, students would develop skills in research, writing, oral presentation techniques, as well as the use of social media and artificial intelligence tools for corporate communication. These skills empower students to tackle intricate problems critically, objectively, and analytically, as well as enhance students' competitiveness by improving their corporate decision-making, problem-solving, and strategic communication abilities.

Upon completing this degree program, students will demonstrate the capability to apply their knowledge to strategize corporate communication plans, thus advancing an organization's vision, mission, and objectives. Furthermore, they will acquire the skills to craft media releases, campaign proposals, and other corporate material that can enhance an organization's image and reputation.

What makes the degree program special is the inclusion of two entrepreneurship courses that not only hone entrepreneurial skills but also encourage self-discovery for improved collaboration effectiveness. Kenneth noted that the program also offers an option for a Massive Open Online Course provided by established online education platform edX, founded by scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University.

“Over the years, we have seen our Corporate Communication graduates successfully climbing up the corporate ladder and securing their C-suite positions in various multinational organisations,” added Kenneth. “Through this programme, it is heartening to know that our graduates have developed the right attitude, knowledge, skills, and most importantly, the executive presence to be a trailblazer who can continually transform and add value to the corporate landscape.”

UTAR's Bachelor of Corporate Communication (Honours) is fully accredited by The Malaysian Qualifications Agency, with full-time students requiring three years to complete this program. As the program mandates students to undergo a three-month internship, they will have the opportunity to gain practical experience in their area of choice, preparing them for the working world.

With that, graduates of this degree program have a plethora of career opportunities available, especially as the corporate communication field is rapidly growing, and its significance as a communication-related discipline is steadily increasing. These career options include corporate communication executive, public relations specialist, communication consultant, event management executive, media liaison officer, speech writer, and community affairs executive, among others.

UTAR offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in areas including Accountancy, Actuarial Science, Applied Mathematics, Arts, Chinese Studies, Malaysia Studies, Business and Economics, Biotechnology, Engineering and Build Environment, Information and Communication Technology, Life and Physical Sciences, Medicine and Health Sciences, Media and Journalism, Education and General Studies, and Agriculture and Food Science.
